Capturing the Heart of NYC: An Interview with Photographer Jade Boucetta
New York City is a photographer’s dream. The vibrant streets, the towering skyscrapers, and the cultural diversity provide endless inspiration. For NYC-based photographer Jade Boucetta, these elements are more than just backdrops—they’re the heartbeat of her work.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Jade to talk about her journey as a photographer, what drives her creative vision, and how New York City has shaped her art.
How did you get started in photography?
Jade smiles as she recalls the beginning of her journey. “I’ve always been captivated by the power of images, but it wasn’t until I moved to New York that I really picked up a camera seriously. The energy here is unlike anything else—it pushes you to notice the little things, the moments that most people pass by. That’s when I knew photography was something I wanted to pursue.”
What do you think makes NYC such a unique place for photographers?
“The diversity,” Jade says without hesitation. “You can walk a few blocks and feel like you’re in a completely different world. The architecture, the people, the food, the fashion—everything is a mix. You can shoot a
high-fashion editorial in the morning and a gritty street series by sunset, all without leaving the city.” Tell us about your creative process.
“I’m always observing,” she says. “As a photographer, I believe that being present is the most important part of the process. I don’t necessarily go out with a shot list or plan. I go out with an open mind, ready to be inspired by whatever I see.”
Jade explains that some of her favorite shots happened spontaneously. “I’ll be walking down the street and notice the way the light hits a building or the way a stranger is interacting with their surroundings. Those are the moments I live for.”
What challenges do you face as a female photographer in the industry?
“Photography, like many creative industries, can sometimes feel like a boys’ club,” Jade admits. “But I think that’s changing. There’s more space now for women to take charge of their narratives and their work. I’ve faced challenges, sure—sometimes people don’t take you as seriously—but I use that as motivation.”
She emphasizes the importance of building a community. “The photography scene in NYC is huge, but it’s also close-knit. I’ve found a great network of female photographers who are all supporting each other, and that’s been invaluable.”
What’s next for you?
Jade grins, excitement in her eyes. “I have a few personal projects I’m working on that center around telling stories of women in the city. I think there’s something really powerful about documenting the everyday lives of women here—whether they’re working, hustling, or just enjoying life.”
She’s also eager to continue exploring more collaborative projects. “I love working with other creatives—fashion designers, artists, and even musicians. New York is full of talent, and I want to tap into that more.”
Final thoughts?
“Photography is such a beautiful way to connect with the world around you,” Jade says thoughtfully. “And in a city like New York, where everything is constantly in motion, there’s never a shortage of stories to tell. My advice to anyone starting out? Always carry your camera, and never stop looking for the beauty in the chaos.”
